Although we do live in a very temperate climate, extremely cold weather conditions do occasionally rear their frosty head. When they do, your home’s backflow preventer and tankless water heater could freeze. To help prevent these potentially expensive mishaps, take a look at these tips. Back flow preventer
From the Mount Pleasant Waterworks’ website: “Backflow assemblies should be protected from freezing. Installing an insulated enclosure over the assembly or turning the water off at the meter and draining the assembly in freezing weather is recommended. Wrapping the assembly with insulation is not recommended because it will prevent access to check valves and the relief valve. There are several types of covers that you can get from irrigation and landscape supply stores that will provide freezing weather protection.”
Gas water heater
The pipe leading into exterior mounted gas water heaters can freeze. Sources claim that allowing hot water to drip slowly inside your home (a sink or bathtub fixture, for example) should prevent the pipe from freezing during cold weather conditions.
