Mount Pleasant is known for quality education and is home to some of the highest-rated public schools in the state.
The schools serving residents of Carolina Park are among the area’s newest and most awarded. In fact, all four of the public schools currently serving students pre-K through 12th grade have earned an average rating of “Excellent.”
The Children’s Center
This private facility offers early childhood education through pre-school. The school opened in 2007 and serves children ages three months through four years in an educational environment designed specifically for young children. Carolina Park Elementary School
Currently under construction and slated to welcome students in the fall of 2017, Carolina Park Elementary will be Mount Pleasant's newest K-5 school. With a capacity of 900 students (expandable to 1,200), the school will be located adjacent to Wando High School and the future public library, allowing many young Carolina Park residents to bike or walk to school each day.
Wando High School
Occupying nearly 100 acres at the entrance to Carolina Park, Wando High School is among the most highly regarded in the region, earning the Palmetto Gold Award and recognition as one of the state’s highest performing secondary schools. The school’s former principal, Lucy Beckham, was named the 2010 MetLife/NASSP National Secondary School Principal of The Year. And Wando High School was also the 2011-2012 recipient of the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association Director’s Cup for Class AAAA, placing it first among the state’s 48 AAAA schools. Oceanside Collegiate Academy
With an ambitious curriculum and a clear commitment to both academic and athletic excellence, this inovative charter high school will be Mount Pleasant's second high school, and the second to call Carolina Park home. Construction is underway on OCA's new facilities, so please check back for updates on its progress.
Wando Center for Advanced Studies
Located on five acres adjacent to the Wando High School campus, the Wando Center for Advanced Studies serves approximately 600 students. The 126,000 square-foot facility encompasses both classroom and lab spaces for programs such as Automotive Technology, Horticulture, Cosmetology, Health Care, Public Safety/Emergency Medical Services, Childcare, Biomedical Science, Film/Multimedia, and Visual Arts. The facility is shared with Trident Technical College for after-hours instruction, providing high school students with the opportunity to begin earning college credits.
Children can attend Laurel Hill Primary School (rated Excellent, winner of the 2011 SC Literacy Spot Award), Charles Pinckney Elementary School (rated Excellent five years running) and Cario Middle School (#6-rated middle school in South Carolina), all of which are located right next door in the Park West community.
Future Public Library
While plans are still being finalized, the county has committed to opening a new 40,000 square foot library on Carolina Park property adjacent to Wando High School and the new Carolina Park Elementary. The library will meet the needs of the entire area while serving as a uniquely convenient resource for residents of Carolina Park. Construction is slated to begin in early summer of 2017.
